Weifang City, located in Shandong Province on China’s east coast, is famous for its huge variety of folk kites – from animals, birds, insects to goddesses and ancient heroes – and for its annual kite festival held every April. The Weifang festival is a must for kite lovers around the planet, who come to compete and experience Weifang’s incredible opening ceremonies. The festival is a modern version of China’s Pure Brightness Festival – Qing Ming Jie – the spring tradition of honoring ancestors, often flying kites to send off bad luck.
